Mansions, Beaches, and Making Pictures… Photo Shoot for Proof Eyewear’s new Lookbook.

October 19, 2012

I did a shoot for Proof Eyewear’s upcoming lookbook this past week here on Oahu.  The shoot was taken near the pool of a large mansion on the east side, then we took the shoot down to the beach where there was a great lava rock backdrop.  I shot with the Canon 7d with 70-200mm f/2.8 L is II and EF 50mm f/1.4.  I also took a few shots with a Nikon D90 with 18-55mm f/3.5-f/5.6 G.  The art director of the shoot, Taylor Dame, called for a film-like edit on these images.  Here is a link to Proof Eyewear’s newly launched website. Watch for the full Lookbook coming soon!

John John at Gas Chambers

September 25, 2012

Made some pictures of John John Florence at Gas Chambers the other day. The waves were maybe 6/10, but he made them look much better. Shot with Canon 7d and 70-200 2.8 L IS II. I’ve been editing much of my surf photography in grayscale lately. I think my background in B&W street photography has influenced this quite a bit, and it works.

The Bahamas- What Your Mother Never Told You

August 23, 2012

Here are some more pictures I made in the Bahamas. I was talking to my friend Matt Lingo the other day about these pictures, and he was blown away about how sketchy the Bahamas really is. When you think of the Bahamas, you think of beautiful blue water and white sand beaches. I guess this is the part of the Bahamas that doesn’t get glorified by the travel agencies and Cruise Lines. So aside from the beautiful beaches, this is what we saw.

Shooting in Color

August 22, 2012

Here is a photograph I made at a truck stop on the i15 headed to Vegas. At the time I had been so heavily involved in making pictures for specific projects like my Glamorous series, I often overlooked the simple, yet important images I had made. It’s great to have a focus and set goals as a photographer and go out and make pictures with a vision in mind. I also feel though that if we are too focused, and too caught up in “the project” at hand, we may miss out on making other great pictures.  So, ABS – Always Be Shooting. This picture was taken at a point when I was transitioning from shooting almost all in grayscale to color. And now, a famous quote from Szarkowski on color. “Most color photography, in short, has been either formless or pretty. In the first case the meanings of color have been ignored; in the second they have been at the expense of allusive meanings. While editing directly from life, photographers found it difficult to see simultaneously both the blue and the sky” – John Szarkowski 1976.
